Upcoming Alabama Bar CLE Course Offering

Dr. Raymond Thompson will offer a course titled
“Product Liability – Forensic Path to Expert Opinion – Automotive Part 1: How and Why Parts Fail”.
This course has been approved by the Alabama State Bar Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Commission of Alabama for a maximum of 1.8 hours’ credit.

The course will be offered on April 20, 2010 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Innovation Depot (1500 1st Ave. North) www.innovationdepot.net in Birmingham, Alabama. The $30 registration fee includes lunch catered by The Culinard Cafe www.culinardcafe.com.

Dr. Thompson has 30+ years product liability experience and has served both plaintiff and defense lawyers in matters of engineering design, failure analysis and manufacturing methods. He is a registered professional engineer and taught engineering from 1978-2002 first at Clemson University and then at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a fellow in the American Society of Metals and the American Welding Society.

Part I of this three part series examines automotive-related case studies of claims involving broken products. The case studies were chosen to represent a wide range of potential defect sources that might not be obvious during an initial inspection of the product or system within which the product functions.

The attendee should leave the course with an understanding of the many ways that product parts can break both due to defective and non-defective causes. The attendee should also come away with some litmus-test observations that suggest a defective versus non-defective condition. Subject matter will focus on mechanical systems such as wheels, axles, trailer hitches, seatbelts, gears and fasteners.

To register, please send your payment (in check form please) and Bar number (if applicable) to the address below or contact by email jsmith@vistaeng.com. We look forward to seeing you on April 20.
